Did you grow up with music? Yes! My parents always had music playing in the house and in the car, especially classical and choral. My mom gave me piano lessons from age 7 to 13. I played baritone in the school band and sang in all the choirs. My parents were very instrumental in developing my love for music.
When did you decide you wanted to study music? I was a senior in high school thinking about what I wanted to study in college. Believe it or not, a CD of hymn singing confirmed my decision. (The CD was "Best Loved Hymns" by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge.) I became obsessed with that CD and thought how incredible it would be to teach others how to sing and hopefully appreciate the beautiful gift of music.
Where did you receive degrees in music? B.A. in Choral Music Education from Dordt University (formerly Dordt College); M.M. in Music Education from Kent State University
How have you been involved in music since graduating? I have taught music at Phoenix Christian School PreK-8 since 2011 (general music, instrumental music, and choral music). I have composed several pieces for my students over the years, some of which have been premiered at our Christmas and Spring concerts. I served as the director of music at Phoenix Christian Reformed Church from 2013-2024.
What are your hobbies? Obviously writing music! I also love gardening, dogs, and cats. Improvising on the piano is another hobby.
